Smart HVAC decisions

Repair or Replace Your AC or Furnace? Here's How to Decide.

When your air conditioner or furnace breaks down, the big question is whether to fix it or start fresh. Use our quick checker and the guidelines below, then let a licensed Medrara HVAC technician give you both prices before you decide. We serve homeowners across the Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, north Orange County and Long Beach.

Repair it when…

A fix will give you years of reliable comfort.

  • Your AC is under about 10 years old, or your furnace is under about 15
  • The problem is one isolated part, like a capacitor, ignitor or thermostat
  • The repair costs well under half the price of a new system
  • Your system is still under warranty
  • Energy bills and comfort have been steady until now

Replace it when…

New equipment will save you money and stress.

  • Your AC is past 12 to 15 years, or your furnace is past 15 to 20
  • You're calling for repairs every season
  • The repair cost is close to half the price of a new system, or more
  • Your energy bills keep climbing and rooms are uneven, noisy or stuffy
  • There's a cracked heat exchanger, a major refrigerant leak or an older R-22 system
Quick checker

Should I repair or replace?

Answer four quick questions for a general idea. It takes less than a minute.

1 How old is your system?
2 Repair quote vs. a new system
3 Repairs in the last 2 years
4 What about your energy bills?

Answer all four to see our suggestion.

This checker gives a general guide only. A licensed technician needs to inspect your system to give an accurate recommendation.

The 50% rule

If a single repair costs more than about half the price of a new system, replacing it is usually the smarter way to spend your money, especially on an older unit.

The age × cost rule

Multiply your system's age by the repair quote. If the result is over $5,000, replacement usually makes sense. If it's under, repair is usually the better call. It's a rule of thumb, not a guarantee.

Know the typical lifespan

AC
10–15 yrs
Heat pump
10–15 yrs
Furnace
15–20 yrs

Typical ranges, shown on a 0 to 25 year scale. Regular maintenance helps systems reach the long end.

Still not sure? We'll give you both prices. Our licensed technicians inspect your system and quote the repair and the replacement upfront, so you can compare and decide. Financing is available for new systems.

Service Questions

HVAC Service Questions, Answered Straight

Quick answers from our licensed technicians about repairs, installations, ductwork and commercial systems.

AC Repair

Cooling problems, fixed fast

01

How fast can I get an AC repair appointment?

We offer same-day AC repair appointments across our service area whenever the schedule allows, and we prioritize no-cooling calls during Inland Empire heat waves. Call (909) 343-8847 and we will give you the earliest arrival window.

02

Why is my air conditioner leaking water or freezing up?

The usual causes are a clogged condensate drain, a dirty filter, low refrigerant or restricted airflow. Turn the system off and let the ice melt, then call us. Running a frozen AC can damage the compressor and turn a small repair into a major one.

03

Is it safe to keep running my AC if it is making strange noises?

Not for long. Grinding, squealing or banging often points to a failing motor, bearing or compressor part. Shut the system off at the thermostat and schedule a repair visit. Catching the problem early usually costs far less than replacing a burned-out component.

Heating Repair

04

What should I do if my furnace smells like gas?

Leave the home right away, do not touch light switches or use your phone inside, and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Once the utility confirms it is safe, call us to inspect and repair the furnace before you turn it back on.

05

Why does my furnace keep turning on and off?

Short cycling is commonly caused by a dirty filter, an overheating heat exchanger, a faulty flame sensor or a thermostat issue. A technician can test the safety switches and airflow to find the cause, which keeps heating bills down and protects the furnace.

06

Do you repair all furnace and heat pump brands?

Yes. Our technicians service all major makes and models of furnaces, heat pumps and air conditioners. Tell us the brand and age of your system when you call and we will bring the right tools and common parts for the job.

New Installation

Right-sized systems, done properly

07

What is included in a new AC or furnace installation estimate?

Your written estimate covers the equipment, labor, refrigerant lines, electrical connections, thermostat, permit handling where required and old-system removal. We explain the options in plain language and confirm the price before any work begins.

08

Do you pull permits for HVAC replacement in California?

Yes, where your city requires them. System replacements generally need a permit and inspection, and we handle that paperwork so the installation is documented, code-compliant and protects your manufacturer warranty.

09

What SEER2 rating should I look for in Southern California?

With long, hot cooling seasons, a higher SEER2 rating pays back faster here than in mild climates. Many homeowners find the 15 to 17 SEER2 range a strong balance of upfront cost and monthly savings. We can compare models for your home and budget.

Ducts & Air Quality

Airflow, filters and efficiency

10

How can I tell if my ductwork is leaking?

Warning signs include high energy bills, dusty rooms, weak airflow at vents, rooms that never reach temperature and visible gaps or disconnected sections in the attic or crawlspace. A duct inspection can pinpoint the leaks.

11

Does duct sealing really lower my energy bills?

It can. Leaky ducts in an attic can lose a significant share of the air you pay to heat and cool. Sealing and repairing them delivers conditioned air to the rooms that need it, so the system runs less and comfort improves.

12

How often should I change my air filter?

Most homes should check the filter monthly and replace it every one to three months, sooner with pets, allergies or nearby dust and wildfire smoke. A clean filter protects the blower and evaporator coil and helps prevent many service calls.

Commercial HVAC

Offices, shops and light commercial

13

What types of commercial HVAC systems do you service?

We repair, replace and maintain rooftop units, package systems and other light commercial heating and cooling equipment for offices, retail spaces, restaurants and similar buildings throughout our service area.

14

Can you schedule work so my business is not disrupted?

We plan visits around your operating hours and the sensitivity of your space, so customers and staff stay comfortable. Let us know your schedule when you book and we will propose the least disruptive window.

15

Is preventive maintenance worth it for a business?

Yes. Regular maintenance catches worn parts and refrigerant issues before they cause a breakdown on the hottest day of the year, extends equipment life and helps keep energy costs predictable. We set up visits to match your equipment and usage.
